The hate on Dwight for his post game needs to be addressed. He HAS post moves. What Dwight is missing isn't variety of offensive moves. He can spin, he can hook, he can use his left hand and he's even got a little face-up J on the left side from short range. And he's got that little face-up drive he learned from Ewing.

If we're comparing him to Shaq, there are a couple of things that need to be considered, the stuff that's holding Dwight back from being a similar type of scorer:

a) Not being comfortable countering from one move into another move... and having a fallback if the counter is stopped. There's a reason Brook Lopez, who has little athleticism by comparison, is a 19 ppg player. He's got a LITTLE bit more range, but he's comfortable going from move to counter to counter to get his shot.

b) Passing. Though improved, Dwight's passing is far below Shaq's level, and that's a big reason why it's been and remains so much easier to dump the ball into O'neal and see what happens because he's not as prone to turnovers that aren't offensive fouls, and because he can create better for others.

c) Physical traits; Dwight's a nasty physical specimen, but what he's not is 7'1 and 295... which Shaq was as a rookie. He's been rocking about 320 since his MVP season, too. Dwight may be 6'11 and 280, but he doesn't have the same kind of base, nor the same kind of upper body power, which gives Shaq the almost completely unique ability to get dominant post position on just about every possession he's ever had in his career because there's no one who can really fight him for it. Dwight has to work at it a lot more.

and

d) Game plan; related to the 3 previous points, the Magic don't really game for Dwight to get 18-21 shots a game, which is what Shaq was getting in his hey-day. Shaq rocked 30%+ usage for 9 straight seasons and was at 27 and 29 as a rookie and sophomore player. Dwight's career-HIGH is 26.1%, set last season. There's no comparison for the difference in usage, the Magic simply don't go to Dwight as often as Orlando and L.A. went to Shaq. They can't do it with Dwight just yet, or haven't been doing it.

It bears mention that Shaq's still producing 18.5/10 PER36 this season for the Cavs, with a usage rate just over 25%. Minutes (as a result of age) are the main reason Shaq isn't still a truly dominant force, not ability.

Anyway, the point is that it's unfair to compare Shaq and Dwight like that, especially if you do it by saying that Dwight "has no post moves." That crap hasn't been true for 2+ seasons at least. It hasn't been a priority; he spent some time learning how to be the best rebounder in the league, then the best defender. The last few years, he's turned himself mostly into a 20 ppg scorer. Until he starts getting more than 9-12 shots a game, though, you're only going to see 18-22 ppg from him. And if Orlando keeps getting deep into the playoffs and making Finals appearances and what-not, then there's nothing wrong with that because he's got the talent around him to play in that style.

Dwight is a beast, but I wouldn't put him in Shaq's class on offense just yet. Shaq put up over 23 points per as a rookie and then didn't drop below 26 a night until he was into his 30s - Howard plateaued at just over 20 a night the last two years and dropped back to 18.5 so far this season.

Good point John...he's completely harmless on offense. I wonder why most teams prefer to double team him and leave good three point shooters wide open?

Do you have any inside sources on this, because no scout in his right mind would agree with this assertion. Its ignorant to think a team tries to gameplan around a big man in the paint and even dumber to think a team needs to focus on stopping a center with no offensive moves.
