Darko's career has been defined by his draft position. If he had been a second round pick, everybody would have said he had a decent career. But a high draft pick comes with high expectations and he never lived up to those expectations.

I agree with you that Darko does have a bad attitude but christ so does half the NBA. Not like he is a criminal or anything (like 10% of the NBA).

The funny thing is you basically spend the first 1/2 of the article bashing his attitude (rightfully so) and the second half of your article contradicting your statement that darko only has himself to blame.

I think Darko is a average NBA player whom some like to paint as a terrible NBA player because he has a bad attitude. Coaches probably dont like him because well, they are coaches. They like to give minutes to the type of guys that coaches like. You know the guy who runs hard all the time, does everything he is told to do, "plays the game like how I used to play when I was a player. Blah, Blah, Blah.

Now because Darko is not a game changer. The guy who takes his minutes (like Tony Battie for instance) wont play so badly that the team will lose because darko is not in the game.

He maybe slightly worse but not noticeably so coaches probably just think. The hell with Darko. He pisses me off but I just cant really pinpoint why? He is just the kind of guy that coaches cant stand.

Personally I am going to miss Darko. He thinks he is awesome and could care less what you, I or anyone else thinks. I kind of like it that he basically tells everyone to "f-off" and does not play the "game" even if in the end the only person he is hurting is himself.

And unless he is like that idiot "Antwain Walker" he should be able to live confortably even if most people in this world just remember him as a bust.

Billups and the other Pistons used to beg Larry Brown to play Darko. Larry hated Darko though because he wanted Dumars to draft Melo instead. Larry Brown ruined Darko.

What exactly are "appropriate minutes" for an 18-year-old, who by the way didn't hustle during his garbage time because he was too embarassed by it and too concerned about looking cool, on a team competing for titles? Think Phil Jackson would have given him more minutes? Or Jerry Sloan? Hell no.
<p>
Sorry, I don't buy it, but thanks for your thoughts Sandy.

While I think Darko has taken on a misplaced "me against the world" attitude, I respectfully disagree with this idea that Darko was the only one to blame for his failed career. He's a primary party, but not the only party.

Detroit and Larry Brown DID do him a disservice in not getting him the appropriate minutes to learn the nuances of the game...and I really believe Joe Dumars believes that, too. How many top picks have had their careers start off the wrong way because a coach or organization fails to bring them along properly? There was no way any of those Pistons at the time would let Darko get away without working, because they demanded so much of each other and saw to it that he was okay...even Rasheed made sure he was getting in good reps.

Orlando was an effed-up situation at one point because of the changes in the front office, and they were asinine for not re-signing Darko, because he was actually progressing there.

In Memphis, he became more jaded and failed to capitalize, but it's fair to remember that he didn't have much backing from the coaching staff, but Darko did fail in seize the day there.

It's also fair to note that he was either a teenager still or early 20s when much of the damage in his early years was done.

Darko may whine and say a bunch of nonsense based out of anger, but he has been righteously angry for things that are justified and worth pointing out. Has he handled his issues well with his words? For the most part, no, but...well, who wouldn't be indignant if they went through the same process as Darko?
