I think Minny knew what they were doing. Taking Rubio so that no other team would be able to, knowing he most likely would not be coming to the States to play in the L. Now that he is staying overseas they could see if he is developing into a future piece of the team or a tradeable asset to set up their future. I do feel bad for their fans though, but every team goes through the ups and downs, and hopefully the T'Wolves are slowly on their way back up over the next couple of years.

[...] Empty the Bench looks at this year’s lottery class so far: “James Harden: His well-trimmed beard isn’t the only thing that’s made Harden an early fan favorite in Oklahoma City. This team has been quietly building up its perimeter depth over the past year or so, and though for now Harden is playing second fiddle to starter Thabo Sefolosha off the bench, his hustle, smarts, and willingness to do whatever is asked of him has entrenched him in Scott Brooks’ regular rotation. Though it may not be until next year, it’s only a matter of time before Harden slides into the starting lineup and sticks there. A future All-Star? Probably not, but has the look of a significant piece on a winning team.” [...]

I believe the T-wolves didn't want to pay the 5 & 6 picks for the next 4-5 years. Rubio did just what they had hoped. It is the price for ball in Minn. Concerning Griffin, if he losses any speed or explosiveness he becomes a smaller non-lottery F.

First of all, it's too early to call it a botch. The T-Wolves basically defered the number four pick for one or two years, meaning that if they play the cards right they can turn Rubio into a solid trade piece or some combo trade / draft pick. They also picked up a nice guard that gets to own all the rookie minutes on a bad team. So they can evaluate the current talent and make better picks in a year or two. Is it a gamble? Yes. But it's still too early to say that it will not pay off.

Joe, we're actually planning to do something similar as this with "the best of the rest draftees so far" sometime in the next week or so, so do check back. Thanks for reading.

I disagree with Travis. You draft to better your team and get them going in the right direction. It doesn't matter what team is being discussed, you never 'bite the bullet;' there was absolutely no need to draft 2 point guards. That was not the way to draft in order to get the Wolves on the right track. The only reason we should be thanking the T-Wolves is for giving us a good laugh, as Kahn looked like a 4 year old trying to pull off such an asinine move. You're right on Spencer, the T-Wolves botched it..badly.

I know it's a lot to ask, but considering how well draftees from lower down the list have done (such as Casspi in Sacramento), shouldn't some special mention have been included?

It's difficult for Timberwolves fans to take much solace in that - especially as they're one of the league's consistently lowest revenue, lowest resourced, least competitive teams.
