Bill Laimbeer’s Combat Basketball: Worst Hoops Video Game Ever?

December 29, 2009

Just a guess here: if you bought Bill Laimbeer’s Combat Basketball for your original Nintendo console, you played it four or five times before it permanently became the cartridge you jammed in there to hold games down.

On the other side, Pat Riley Basketball for Sega was awesome!
No NBA license, but it did have a dunk-cam where you mashed the buttons to either slam or block the dunk.

It was no Double Dribble (or Exciting Basket, for our Japanese readers), that’s for sure. The Boston Frogs were unstoppable.

This game really isn’t that bad. It’s a riot to play with friends because you can kick the crap out of each other while playing basketball. It’s basketball + hockey. That Michael Jordan game (Trouble in the Windy City?) was FAR worse than BLCB.

The best part is that you earn money when you win and the ultimate team you can buy is a roster full of Bill Laimbeers. CLASSIC.

Just think people like to whine about EA Sports’ NBA Live series these days. They don’t know how good they got it compared to those video games back in the ’80s/’90s.
