Fantasy Football – Week 4 RB Rankings

October 2, 2009

Glen CoffeeWe tend to aggressively rank our weekly fantasy plays, within reason. Sometimes we nail it, sometimes we flub–yes, even ETB makes overly optimistic predictions from time to time. Not often, but it does happen. This week, however, we’re fairly confident you’ll thank us for starting breakouts-in-waiting like Donald Brown and Glen Coffee.

The Franklin Delano Gore-Glen Coffee situation in San Francisco is Exhibit A for why you always, always, always secure solid handcuffs to your RB1. With Gore out for the next 2 weeks, Coffee will essentially step into Gore’s role as the team’s main offensive weapon and get a full load at home against the lowly St. Louis Rams this Sunday. He also gets another home game next week against an Atlanta Falcons rush defense that’s ranked towards the bottom. Yes, Coffee is a sexy fantasy play, especially for those of you who scooped him up and foiled those Gore owners who weren’t smart enough to prioritize Coffee on draft day. It’s like pissing in their Cheerios.

Start Glen Coffee with confidence as your RB2. Start Donald Brown with confidence as your RB3/Flex. And speaking as a frustrated Steve Slaton owner to others in the same boat, don’t give up on the man just yet: I smell somewhat of a breakout game this week at home against the Oakland Raiders. Pencil him in for 140+ total yards and at least one score.

Not that I disagree, but why do you two think that Leon Washington will have a better week than Thomas Jones?

Also, if my four RB flex options are Leon, Ryan Grant, McFadden and Ray Rice, do you think I should start Leon fo’ sho?

Keep up the good work.

So I see LenDale right above Caddy. I have a team with both of them AND Chris Johnson. Does that make starting Caddy over LenDale a no-brainer? Thanks!

That’s a tough one. LenDale hasn’t practiced all week because of the flu; guessing he’ll play, but do wonder if his energy/strength will be somewhat sapped. With Derrick Ward out this week, Caddy is in line for a full load (Earnest Graham will primarily be a blocker). I’d personally roll with Caddy, but wouldn’t expect much.

No Tashard Choice? Even if Barber plays, it’s unlikely he gets all the carries given his injury status. Cowboys lead the league in rushing too…

I have LT, Reggie, Ahmad Bradshaw, Leon, and Chester Taylor. I have BJacobs starting, and need to choose one of these others to be my 2nd RB – which do you think? Right now I’m leaning towards Leon, I don’t trust Bush and Bradshaw had a boot on earlier this week so I’m skeptical.

Jeff, that’s my bad–I was doing some last-minute editing and forgot to put Choice’s name back in there as a slash with Barber. We consider them just about equal plays this week, though Barber will likely get the goal-line carries. I’ve added him back in.

Michael – We have Leon higher for a couple reasons. I know they’re splitting carries, but if the Saints jump out to a lead, which they’re imminently capable of doing on anybody, then the Jets will be passing. Leon can be a big part of the passing game, Jones cannot. Also, the Saints lack of speed on defense makes them extremely susceptible to the big play, which Leon is capable of producing and, again, Jones is not. The ceiling is higher for Leon.

I think Leon is your man as well, Jake. One consideration in starting Bradshaw would be reliability – if you start Jacobs and Ahmad then you’re guaranteeing yourself that you will own all of the production from the NYG backfield on Sunday, which should be plenty. There’s an appeal to that, knowing you’ll have all their TDs and yards. But Leon has higher upside here for the reasons mentioned above. Do you expect to beat your opponent? Then go boring, lock up the Giants. Do you need two guys to potentially have huge games? Leon has that capability.

Well I also have Eli ( I also have Matt Ryan) so I play Eli in an Offensive Player slot my league has. So I don’t likeusing all 3 Giants, I think I’ll go with Washington.
