Clinton Portis' fantasy owners have appreciated his effort so far

We thought Clinton Portis was donezo long ago.

Elite running backs tend to fall off a cliff without much warning (see Shaun Alexander), and after averaging 314 carries a season over his first 4 years, the 27-year-old Portis had his third season with the ‘Skins cut in half due to injury. He suited up for only eight games in ’06, eight games in which he was largely ineffective and outplayed by LaDell Betts, who at the time looked bigger, stronger, faster, and about ready to blow up into a legitimate starting back.

The pounding of a Joe Gibbs offense had finally gotten to him, so we thought, and we wanted nothing to do with Portis last season, or this one. Well, fine. We were wrong then, and so far this season we’ve been wrong again.

Portis has gotten off to a fine start to his fantasy season, already racking up 514 yards rushing and 4 TDs in five games. His 4.5 YPC and 102.8 yards rushing are both his best since ’03 with the Denver Broncos; it’s all added up to Portis entering a cake matchup against the dismal Rams on Sunday as the #7 overall fantasy back in ETB’s scoring format.

Expect another 100+ yard effort this week, along with at least one score… and just look at his next few matchups, too: vs. Cleveland and @ Detroit. Hey, good for you, Clinton Portis owners. Good. For. You.

Without further ado, it’s Empty the Bench’s Week 6 fantasy football position ranks. Read them, study them, print them out and tuck ‘em under your pillow on Saturday night for good luck.

Any thoughts on where Colston will rank if he plays? (Also, any news on if he’ll play?)

Posted by: Greg H on October 9th, 2008 at 1:04 pm

I don’t anticipate seeing Coltson until Week 7, and that’s assuming there are no setbacks.

If he does play this week he will likely be very limited physically and in terms of snaps. Being a bye week he would make a decent flex play, but wouldn’t crack the top 20 until we see what he can do on the field first or at least get some positive reports from practice.

I wasn’t anticipating him playing, but I saw that he’d been upgraded to questionable and the reports I read earlier this afternoon seemed to be somewhat favorable (certainly more favorable than the out till October 19 report that came out on Monday).

HEY I’VE GOT SOME LAST MINUTE QUESTIONS FOR THIS UPCOMING WEEK 6. WHICH QB TO START, ROMO OR CUTLER? WHICH 2 BACKS TO START, SLATON,JACOBSON,MCCLAIN,OR ADDAI? WHICH THREE WR’S, HENDERSON,A.JOHNSON,BREASTON,STOKLEY OR COLSTON? I KNOW IT’S A LOT BUT THIS IS MY FIRST YEAR IN FANTASY AND I’M STILL LEARNING. I REALLY APPRECIATE ANY FEEDBACK, THANKS-J :)

Hey J,

Well, you can always just refer to the ranks for who we like over who, but let’s see here… here’s my gut picks for you:

QB – Romo
RB – Slaton and Jacobs
WR – Johnson, Henderson, and… Breaston.

Keep an eye out for any further updates on Colston, though: usually you want to wait a week in these situations, but if he’s feeling good Colston could have a huge game. I have a feeling the Saints are really going to take out some frustration on the Raiders this week.

i would go Romo, although you can’t go wrong with Cutler. Jacobs and McClain. Johnson, Breaston, and Stokely. Saints WR are never reliable and raiders have a good secondary.

THANKS GUYS I APPRECIATE IT… THE GUY I’M GOING UP AGAINST IS STARTING JENNINGS,FITZGERALD,A.ROGERS.A PETERSON,M.TURNER,L.MOORE..SO I NEED BRING MY A GAME. YOU THINK SLATON VS MIAMI’S D OVER MCCALIN VS COLTS? AND STOKLEY OVER HENDERSON? LET ME KNOW I’M PUTTIN’ EM IN TODAY. THANKS

Posted by: J on October 11th, 2008 at 12:38 pm

It’s ultimately your call, but Slaton has been on a roll and I don’t think you can bench him right now… especially if you’re in a PPR league.

Posted by: Brian Spencer on October 11th, 2008 at 2:26 pm

HOW DO I KNOW IF I’M IN A PPR LEAGUE? WHAT ABOUT HENDERSON OVER STOCKLEY? SOORY TO KEEP BUGGIN’ JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE I’M MAKIN’ THE RIGHT MOVES…THANKS -J
