Postcards From LA, Vol. 17: One Lakers Fan Tracks His Team Through the NBA Playoffs

Postcards From LA 17

As long as the Los Angeles Lakers survive through the 2008 NBA playoffs, Empty the Bench’s West Coast correspondent Christopher Thell will be submitting a local fan’s take on his beloved Lakers’ postseason trials, tribulations and successes. In this edition: utter devastation.

pathetic choke job
a 24 point lead blown;
series is over

That haiku succinctly summarizes Game 4. I would write more but the sordid details of the Lakers 97-91 loss to the Celtics after leading by 24 in the first half and 20 with 7:07 remaining in the 3rd quarter are simply too painful and maddening to recount.

In the sage words of Walter Sobchak, “Aww, fuck it Dude. Let’s go bowling.”

Sure about that? I think I could take a stab at it!

I’ve been watching the Lakers since I saw Elgin Baylor play for the Minneapolis Lakers at the old Saint Paul Auditorium, when they played the occasional game there instead of Minneapolis. That’s when I could wait outside the locker room and get autographs from Elgin and Hot Rod Hundley and visitors like Clyde “Jelly Belly” Lovellette. And this is the WORST CHOKE JOB by any Lakers team I have seen in 50 years. Forget about the vaunted Celtics defense - this was a pure and simple CHOKE on an epic scale.
