He was a free agent and he was asking for more money than they could afford. Instead of just letting him walk (which he was going to do), they were able to talk Atlanta into an ill-advised sign-and-trade deal in which Phoenix got Boris Diaw, two future first-round picks and a $6 million trade exception. That said, if I'm a Phoenix fan going forward I would like a team built around Joe Johnson, Shawn Marion, Leandro Barbosa and Amare Stoudemire a whole heck of a lot more than one built around Amare, Shaq, Nash and Hill.
