Good article. BUT...it seems like everyone is hating on DOC Rivers this year... NOBODY and I mean NOBODY predicted Boston would make it to the playoffs this year... Trades happened and suddenly we start hearing "OK but that doesnt mean anything, they wont get along"....wrong...Im a diehard Celts fan (even when they were horrible)and even i didnt expect them to blend so quickly...I guess people dont really understand that just putting stars on a team doesnt equal a championship...so DOC took Garnett (the star on his horrible his team) Allen (a star on his horrible team) and Pierce (the star on his horrible team) and somehow made them into a 3 headed monster...you have to understand that all 3 of these guys were basically the goto/do all/star guy on their teams... they are use to having to carry the team and take the responsibility of the loss/win...they have ALL lowered their numbers from last year...on paper, they look like they had a bad year...so DOC has to somehow make them blend, which nobody expected... and that my friends is not an easy task...look at the results...unbelievable...and they made the biggest turnaround in NBA history and all I hear now is "OH, no big deal cuz they got Garnett and Allen this year"...best record in the NBA, "OH but that was expected"...cmon people, he coached his ass off and got everyone to blend...

Byron Scott deserves credit, I give him that...he did so much with so little and made the Hornets the team to beat this year...CP3 had alot to do with it but I think we all know that eventually he was going to become a star...Scott helped him get to that point, quickly...i wouldnt be mad at all if Scott got COY...he does deserve recognition...amazing team, amazing record...but dont toot Scotts horn too much, if he was in DOCs place, he wouldnt have put Boston where they are at...give DOC his due people...

Adelman deserves no credit for nothing...he has been coaching for years but that winning streak wasnt all that impressive to me...they played bullshit teams and I believe a couple of teams in the NBA could have done it with that exact same schedule...but then what happened? Boston beat them and they came back down to reality...lost a host of games...went back to their "normal" self...the only thing I really do give him 100% credit for is surviving at all after Yao went out...much respect for that...other than that, expect them out in 1 round, maybe 2...if they get that far...

The Zenmaster Phil Jackson...blah blah blah...not impressed at all...Bynum was impressive in how he has improved...Bean Bryant, WOW, his stats were amaz-----OH---wait, no they werent....his stats werent the same as in past years...not impressed...Bean is Bean...hes going to put up those number anywhere on any team...Phil Jackson is Phil Jackson...maybe some people could be amazed with his coaching skills but I was around in the 90s and in this team and these years dont even compare to those championship years, so I dont see the big deal at all...sorry Bean fanatics...

Mo Cheeks did a good job this year with the Sixers...he did alot with nothing and somehow made it to the playoffs...but outside of that...nothing overly impressive...better luck next year...

I dont understand why Flip Saunders from Detroit isnt on the list...they improved on their record from last year and actually have recovered from the Ben Wallace deal...credit deserved....

so this is my opinion of COY and how it should go...hopefully DOC will get his due for a job well done...step off haters!!!!

To be fair, Byron Scott has absolutely coached his butt off this year. He's gotten Paul, who was already in that "third year PG" groove to complement West perfectly and the rotations on that team have been executed perfectly all season.

Doc's done a fantastic job and, as is the case every year, everyone on this short list deserves the award but you can't overlook Scott here, not when Rivers has had so much help on the defensive end with the influx of veterans and the masterful work of Thibodeau and given Rivers' track record, it's hard to give him too much credit for that.

Phil Jackson doesn't get a lot of the credit he deserves simply because he's so quiet. It's a great article and I think Doc Rivers has done a great job with the Celtics, but Byron Scott has really impressed us all by turning this team into a legit contender their first year. Knowing how and when to properly use your players is the key to success as a coach. I really wish the NBA had set criteria for what it takes to be an MVP or a COY.

You should never give Coach of the Year to a guy who tanked games! (Check last year)

If you're going to make an argument for Doc as COY, you may as well just bypass him and give the award to Danny Ainge or Kevin McHale. If Boston hadn't done as well as they did then Rivers would've been fired.
Adelman and Jackson both have pretty solid (and fairly similar) arguments favoring them, Scott did a great job of taking a bunch of role players and getting them to all fit together well.
If Cheeks had taken a sucky team to the playoffs in the West, he'd be the guy, but since he's in the East it isn't that impressive. Still, I'd take any of the last 4 (and a few others) before I'd take Doc as the COY.

The true "coach" and motivator of the Boston Celtics is Kevin Garnett. Doc rolls the ball out there and says "play ball."

I guess Doc's only real credentials for the award are not letting his ego get in the way and mess up a good thing!

I don't think we can rule-out coaches for COY because they have excellent players, MVP candidates at that. There's something to be said about a coach who can integrate talent like that into a successful system.
