Kurtis Blow’s Favorite Play is the Alley-Oop

March 20, 2008

This homage to NBA basketball from the year 1984 has it all: a fat man covering a foot-long hot dog in mustard, professional dancers dressed as street thugs dunking on a lowered rim, a cheerleading squad without a choreographer, The Fat Boys (!), nunchucks, and, of course, hip-hop legend Kurtis Blow rapping basketball and rocking his finest Lionel Richie look. Classic.

i’ve been incorporating a cover of this into a dreamfox song lately.

this song has fascinated me going on 10 years now.

favorite things about “basketball”:

1, “I like this basketball thing” – As if basketball had been invented within the past calandar year.

2. While its not in the youtube radio edit of the song there is a spoken dialogue bridge in which kurtis and some guys discuss just who is the best basketball. “Yeah Wilt had them points, but russell got them riiiiiiiings!”

3. Its just so wholesome; to think such a vulgar art form came from a point where it was just a guy singing about how much he loves basketball.

4. the pill. the pill. THE PILL.

5. You can take the chorus and change it to just about anything people are playing. “They playing TEC-MO BOOOOOOOOWL! They love that TEC. MO. BOOOOOOOOOWL.!”
