Hate to sound like a naysayer, but it's been my experience watching the NBA for many years that you just don't win championships building around a high scoring player who doesn't play defense. Look at Amare-- he had one of the best wing players in basketball AND an MVP point guard AND the sixth man of the year on his team and still couldn't get by Duncan and the Spurs... because he is such a huge defensive liability and great teams will always be able to take advantage of that.... I hope Jefferson works hard on his D in the upcoming years, because if he continues to be a disinterested defender, the most the timberwolves can hope for is more wins, but definitely not future titles, not with the likes of Dwight Howard, Greg Oden, and Tyson Chandler hanging around for the next decade...

I agree with your premise. Thanks to Miami and their ridiculously injury-prone star Dwyane Wade, the Wolves are only the 2nd worst team in the NBA.

Still, they have a long way to go. I would argue that Telfair is expendable (very, very expendable). And of course Minnesota needs to work on getting a decent center. If they can do that, the future could be bright for this club.

Great article! I agree that Wittman is not a good end-of-game coach. It seems like he is just as young (in terms of experience) as his team. Wasn't he paying attention in the 4th quarter, all those years as an assistant coach?

There is no way we will get Rose without trading up. We will win at least 20 games this year.

a pox...? i scoff at your pox and spit on your timberwolves again. and again. and once more with feeling. may my spittle engulf and envelop your entire pathetic upper midwestern state and all of its docile, doe-eyed debutantes and leave them barren and barefoot. I SPIT ON YOU MINNESOTA!

Enjoyed the article. McCants will probably never be the player he already thinks he is, I'm afraid. He can have good shooting nights like this evening, but it feeds into his immense ego. Then he doesn't play within himself and the team suffers. Overall size at every position is deficient (unless Big Al is a four and not a five). The team needs a young, healthy Theo Ratliff-type to have Al's back, but there isn't one out there. With our poor luck in the lottery, why consider a Beasley or a Rose? I doubt either falls into our lap.

I'm right with you Jason. The statistics back you up as well. When Jefferson plays the PF role his splits against the opponent are fantastic, but when he's asked to guard centers he gives up so much on the defensive end that it completely mitigates his strong offensive contributions. He's a PF on both ends of the floor, through and through.
