Marbury, Kirilenko Might Shut It Down

April 9, 2007

I'm hurting. Oh, lord, how I'm hurting.

With his team’s odds of making the playoffs now standing at about 1,000 to 1, New York Knicks point guard Stephon Marbury may sit out the rest of the season and join a long list of knicked-up Knicks limping into what they hope is a restorative offseason. Marc Berman for the New York Post reports that Marbury “wore a boot and a suit” to New York’s away game against Milwaukee, and that Starbury revealed in addition to a painful turf toe, he’s also dealing with a sore back, knee tendinitis, and the disappointment of another losing season.

Marbury had to wear a boot on his right foot just to move around. The toe swelled up significantly yesterday morning, and the painkilling shot he took during Friday’s game didn’t help. When asked if he’s done for the season, Marbury said, “I don’t know. I want to play. I took that shot yesterday [Friday] thinking it would help. I’m going to let the doctors and trainers decide.”

“It’s tough to deal with,” Marbury said. “We saw light at the end of the tunnel. Now the door is closing. I think for us, we hate to be looking forward to next year. At the same time, injuries do happen.”

Yes, they do, especially if you’re employed by James Dolan. After a horrid start to the season, Marbury had actually turned it around and was one of the main reasons his team was entertaining postseason hopes as recently as two weeks ago. Marbury’s fantasy owners might look to pint-sized, ill-tempered Nate Robinson as a roster replacement; against Milwaukee on Sunday, Robinson went off for 34 points, 7 assists, 4 rebounds, 2 steals, and 5 three-pointers on 54% shooting. He attempted thirteen three’s on the night.

The Salt Lake Tribune also reports that Andrei Kirilenko has an f’ed up widdle thumb that could keep him out of the lineup for at least two weeks. Already not one of his favorite peeps, Jazz head coach Jerry Sloan feels powerless about the whole damn thing.

So while teammate Deron Williams bounced back from the strained groin he suffered against the Kings to compile 24 points and 13 assists in a 106-103 loss to Seattle at EnergySolutions Arena on Saturday night, Kirilenko sat subdued behind the Jazz bench, in a gray suit and a protective split on his injured thumb. “I can’t do a thing about it,” coach Jerry Sloan said.

What an awful image: Kirilenko wearing a drab gray suit in the depressingly named EnergySolutions Arena. Hopefully Ak-47′s wife, Masha, is faring better with her clothing line than her husband has in his sixth, and by far worst, professional season to date.
