What’s with the Flip Saunders Obsession?
April 5, 2007

The Flip Saunders-to-Minnesota rumors are still… STILL… coming out of Minneapolis. This time, however, it’s not him coaching the Minnesota Golden Gophers next year; it’s about him re-assuming his position on the Minnesota Timberwolves bench. Yeah, I know.
Before Saunders officially turned down the Gophers position a few weeks ago, some sportswriters in The Land of 10,000 Lakes were practically foaming at the mouth about a possible Flip homecoming. First, it was just speculation that he might leave Detroit. Then it morphed into he’s definitely going to leave Detroit. Then it was ex-head coach Glen Mason said a deal was already in place for Flip to coach the Gophers. Then it was Flip secretly wears itsy-bitsy bikinis under his suits during road games. Okay, not really, but you get the picture.
One would assume the speculation would die after Tubby Smith was hired to coach the Gophers… but no. In today’s Pioneer Press, Charley Walters fantasizes about Saunders returning to the T’Wolves:
Pssst: The Gophers missed out on hiring Flip Saunders because of a timing issue with the NBA playoffs, but don’t think the Detroit Pistons coach couldn’t be enticed to return to the Timberwolves if he were given dual responsibilities of coach and general manager.
Pssst. Hey, psssssssssssst, Charley: um, no. Get over it.
