Reggie Miller: Dallas Maverick?

February 28, 2007

Reggie Miller knows the score

The Dallas Star-Telegram is reporting this morning the Mavs may sign Reggie Miller for the stretch run, and coach Avery Johnson would not refute the reports. Miller is currently an analyst for TNT, but he has kept himself in good shape and thinks he could provide a perimeter threat and clutch shooting to the Mavericks.

Owner Mark Cuban said the Mavs might reach into the NBA retirement basket and sign former Indiana Pacers guard Reggie Miller to a contract for the rest of the season.

Kevin Garnett, for one, thinks Miller could make the move back to the court. Scottie Pippen? Not so much. “If it’s Reggie Miller, yeah,” Garnett said. “Michael Jordan, yeah. Any other old names you want to put in there, I don’t think so.” Miller’s game never did rely on sheer athleticism as much as hustle, heady play and a knack for hitting every big-shot (Ring a bell, Knicks fans?). I wouldn’t expect this to be a major development, but it would certainly be valuable to have Miller on the court during inbound possessions in late-game situations, especially in the playoffs. That said, he likely would not exceed 10 minutes a game. Hopefully no reports will surface that Reggie’s ulterior motive for the comeback is to pay off sizeable debts incurred buying an aircraft carrier or the like.
