Scottie Pippen: Coming Out (Of Retirement)?

February 16, 2007

Chicago Tribune columnist Sam Smith is reporting that Scottie Pippen intends to make a return to the NBA this season. Pippen wants to come back in time for the stretch run, and he hopes to provide depth and lend his considerable playoff experience to a championship contender.

“I’m thinking of trying to come back for the playoffs,” Pippen said. “Something like the last two months of the season, somewhere I can come back and play limited minutes to start, play point forward for someone and build toward the playoffs. It’s something I’ve been thinking about for the last three months.”

Pippen is in his best physical condition in years, and he says his knee feels healthy. His body fat is reportedly at an all-time low of 5%. We at Empty the Bench hopes he can catch on with somebody, it would be a lot of fun to see Scottie reprising his famous point-forward role in a playoff game alongside a dynamic scorer. He said he would like to play for Cleveland or Miami. Cleveland makes a lot of sense, he could take some of the pressure off of LeBron, relieving him of some ball-handling duties and keeping him fresh for crunch time. But wouldn’t the Lakers make the most sense? Pippen reuiniting with Tex Winter’s triangle offense seems too perfect, especially with Kobe already in place to play the Jordan role.

“I’m moving good. I feel pretty fast and you don’t forget the game. I watch and see so many young guys who don’t know how to run a team and I feel I could help someone.”
